Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get started with your current career path/business journey?
I'm a junior studying Media, Culture, & Communication at NYU, and I love to meet new people! I think my field of study and my curiosity of learning about people's backgrounds go hand-in-hand, so I'm still navigating what specific roles this interest entails. When going full-time, I hope to work in a marketing or advertising role, and the work I do at Luminary is definitely carving that path.
What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?
Treating people with kindness is so important no matter what setting I'm in, so I think my ability to create a friendly, comfortable space has helped me get opportunities to learn from others and receive hands-on experience. However, I'm still just starting out my career, so I have plenty to learn from, and the team at Luminary sets a great example of the kind of work ethic I want to have.
What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?
One mistake I made when first starting out my internship search was that I accepted a role that I did not research enough beforehand. I assumed that because the position title matched my career path, the responsibilities of the position would also cater to my interests - which it did not completely. Moving forward, I'm always more careful in studying job postings and understanding what each listed responsibility entails.
What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?
I'm trying to learn how to make meaningful connections by networking with people in a natural way, to learn about different companies.
In what ways are you taking care of your personal well being and what are your #selfcare tips?
I can't get anything done unless I put myself in the right mental state, so I try to maintain my well-being by making sure I step out of my room to get a change of scenery - whether that means going to my brother's room to bother him or by paying my kitchen a visit and grabbing a snack! What also works great for me is making sure I virtually connect and check in with my friends the same way I would in real life, and the various social media platforms make it really easy to do this. Cooking for my family is also something that has recently brought me a lot of joy (which hopefully my family enjoys as well).
How are you inviting others to take a seat at the table #virtually?
I definitely will be sharing to my friends (both from NYU and California), who are also just starting out their careers, about Luminary's powerful community. Networking in a strictly professional setting can be difficult and uncomfortable sometimes, so I think a virtual and physical space like Luminary is extremely valuable and can teach me and my peers a lot.
What impact has Luminary made in your career? eg: Business Generated, Revenue, New Clients, Career Connections, Advancement Opportunities
Although I'm just a week into this internship, I've been able to connect with over 15 people already. I'm certainly receiving the Community aspect that Luminary is known for, and I look forward to more of it.
