Meet Luminary Member, Sarah O'Brien Hammond

Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get started with your current career path/business journey?

The Network of Women was born through my own's life journey and in particular an awakening I had at 41. I was sprinting through life, trying to check off all the boxes that society says will ultimately lead you to joy and happiness (that 'pot of gold' at the end of the rainbow). I was quite busy checking off all those boxes -- finding a partner, a job that afforded me nice 'things', purchasing my first home, having children, etc. etc. And when I picked my head up at 41 I thought I must have 'arrived' right? Quite the contrary. I literally had no idea where I was or which direction I was heading. I hadn't reflected in 41 years! Never stopped to ask myself what do I want from life? What are my goals, dreams, aspirations? It took some time and a lot of help from coaches/healers/experts to figure out what brought me fulfillment, happiness and purpose in life. And then I realized, in speaking with other women, they, too, felt like they were rushing through life without truly realizing what fuels them. What brings them happiness, purpose and fulfillment. I realized at that moment I needed to create a community for growth minded women to gather, to connect, to learn and be inspired by one another to take action in their own lives. I am inspired every day by the women who make up this community and can't wait to see where this journey takes us all!

How are you overcoming challenges during the pandemic as a business owner?

I think with challenges come opportunities. Yes, it has been hard, brutal at times. Very much testing us all to our core. However, I feel this current climate has allowed us to pivot to a digital platform giving us much greater visibility and reach than we would have ever had as a solely IRL community. The challenge is making sure people are getting as much from a virtual experience as they would from an IRL experience. I want them to feel our energy, love and support pouring through their computers and literally feel our hands holding them up which can be tough when you are virtual. I think it means you have to listen that much more to your community members, making sure they really feel seen and heard which is critical to us! We continue to work on being the best we can and supporting our members with everything we have!

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

I am a total optimist. I believe everything has a solution and can be figured out. I always see the good in people and situations. A positive mindset has greatly contributed to my success in life. Yes, hard work, tenacity and commitment also contributes but mindset is really everything!

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?

I think not asking myself if my career was truly serving me. I stayed in a career for a very long time that was serving me financially but not in other ways -- more important ways. I would encourage others to really reflect, especially on career, and make sure you are doing something that fuels you. Because if it fuels you and makes you happy that's the motivation one needs to achieve success.

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

Management. I enjoy managing people but it is an art I have yet to perfect.

In what ways are you taking care of your personal well being and what are your #selfcare tips?

Health and wellness is one of our four pillars at The Network of Women (in addition to Self Discovery, Career and Motherhood) so to say we take it seriously would be an understatement. We love learning new self care techniques and bring everything from physical well being, emotional well being and spiritual well being to The NoW. Personally, my day will always go sideways if I don't fit in my meditation, workout, 30 minutes of learning and dinner with my family. I am human, those things don't always happen, but that is what I strive for everyday in order to keep my sanity.

How are you inviting others to take a seat at the table #virtually?

I am most proud of the inclusive community we've created at The Network of Women. The voices you see and hear at The NOW are from women of all backgrounds, life experiences and perspectives. We are like minded in our morals and values but welcome and celebrate our differences.

What impact has Luminary made in your career? eg: Business Generated, Revenue, New Clients, Career Connections, Advancement Opportunities

Luminary has been such a blessing for me personally and professionally. I just feel more productive working in such a gorgeous space surrounded by other bad a$$ women making a difference in this world. I have met great women, many of which are now close friends, and have collaborated on various projects and initiatives with several members. People want to connect, learn what you are doing and help each other out. It is rare to find that and I am beyond grateful that I did!
