Luminary Member Mallika Malhotra

Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get started with your current career path/business journey?

I started my photography business 13 years ago as a child portrait photographer. I was a stay at home Mom with two young sons and the camera became a life line for me. Over the years, I added headshots, senior portraits, workshops, brand photography and more. In 2015, I decided to niche down to brand photography only and this pivot helped advance my business rapidly. I added brand strategy to my offerings and currently I help women entrepreneurs build their brands and become the face of their business.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

Grit. I have had my business for over 13 years and have had three sons plus moved to 4 states in my entrepreneurial journey. I have had to reintroduce my brand and restart my business multiple times. My last move to Maine was during the pandemic. I think my high energy and drive has helped me move past obstacles and seek opportunities.

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, or in your business, and what did you learn from it?

Not investing in myself through coaching and just winging it. To grow personally and professionally, it is a MUST to hire a coach or mentor that is more advanced than you. They can teach you so much so that you can accelerate your growth. You can't do this work alone!

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

Leading a team. I have two VAs, a photo editor and a bookkeeper. I want to delegate tasks and not micromanage while also keeping them inspired and engaged.

How do you invite others to take a seat at the table?

I make connections, introductions, spotlights on my platforms and even invite them to speak as experts to my community. I think it's important to give people a chance to showcase their expertise.

What is one thing you wish you knew a year ago?

It's ok to pivot and shift your brand message. For so long, I was known for my brand photography but when the pandemic happened I had to evolve my brand story and offerings to be online. I started to position myself as a brand mentor and strategist.
