Meet Luminary Member, Janna Meyrowitz Turner

Tell us a bit about yourself! How did you get started with your current career path/business journey?

I’m a business strategist, marketing and comms pro and an angel investor/advisor to women and minority-led companies. I also work 1:1 with executives and entrepreneurs on their personal brands. It’s strategic communications and business development for the self and I call it Personal Brand Alignment. In 2006 at 23 years old, I founded Style House, which is now a boutique award-winning strategic communications and business development consultancy specializing in female-forward brands on a mission. Our client work has spanned small and indie businesses, globally traded companies (Estee Lauder, Deckers Corp., Global Brands Group), venture-backed startups and legacy turnarounds including the WNBA and Prescriptives. I advise and invest in companies addressing motherhood, women’s wellness, cannabis and more, including HeyMama, Garden Society, Small Packages, Gardenio, Hatch Maternity.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why?

Staying focused on my own personal North Star mission of getting more women and underrepresented folks into positions of power and ensuring they thrive there. I also like sitting in rooms with other smart people solving systemic, complex problems and I use these as filters for opportunities that come my way.

What’s a mistake you made early on in your career, and what did you learn from it?

I have always loved and been very good at working from home, but as my team grew and the caliber of our clients grew I felt like I needed an office to be “official”. I loved our first office and it made sense for us, but we outgrew it after a few years and moved to a larger one. One day I realized that it wasn’t aligned with my values or how I wanted to run my business to be leasing an office when I’d prefer to invest in strong talent - both paying employees well and also taking good care of them from a benefits and wellness perspective. I learned you don’t need an office to be official and now the rest of the world knows that too since COVID!

What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

I’m learning more about board service. I serve on nonprofit boards but am learning more about corporate board service, both to position myself for it as well as my Personal Brand Alignment clients. Board service seems like the best way for polymaths (people who are good at many things) like myself and my clients to future-proof our careers/earning potential.

In what ways are you taking care of your personal well being and what are your #selfcare tips?

I have a post-it on my mirror to remind me of my top three priorities: Health, Get Paid, Make an Impact. I also have a Do Every Day list that has about 15-20 things I want to make sure I do every day, mostly mental/emotional/physical health related, and it keeps me focused on what’s next when I’m routinely interrupted by my six year old son, my husband or a litany of other things...

How are you inviting others to take a seat at the table #virtually?

I’m a super connector of bright and interesting people and I’ve been so fortunate during COVID to be doing the fulfilling work of Personal Brand Alignment with my clients virtually. Helping women understand and embrace their power and influence, all over Zoom, and then also brokering relationships between these powerful women to do something magical together is honestly everything for me in this moment.

What impact has Luminary made in your career? eg: Business Generated, Revenue, New Clients, Career Connections, Advancement Opportunities

I’ve always found Luminary’s team and members to be so warm, engaged and supportive which is basically everything you could want in a community. Cate is such a force and inspiration! I’ve appreciated being able to workshop some of my ideas with fellow Luminary members - starting back in March with “The X-Factor of Relationship Capital” with my friend and fellow-Luminary member Kristin O’Keeffe Merrick, and just this past week with my Personal Brand Alignment workshop.
